Enjoy a spectacular view hiking over the Siete Cruces Mountains to Pico Zunil, ending with a relaxing dip in the Fuentes Georginas natural hot springs.
The Pico Zunil trek allows you a unique look into four of Guatemala´s alpine ecosystems over a two day period. This hike leaves Quetzaltenango every Wednesday and Saturday. We meet at the Quetzaltrekkers office at 7:30am to eat a hearty breakfast before catching a bus to the town of Xecam.
We begin with a climb through the cloud forest of Cantel, up to a mountain lookout at 3100m. Here we enjoy lunch with views into the valley of Xela, Lago de Atitlan, and the Antigua Volcanoes. Then we hike along the Siete Cruces mountain ridge, surrounded by savannah vegetation, until we arrive at the base of Pico Zunil to set up camp. A short climb to the summit offers spectacular views of Volcanoes Santo Tomas and Santa Maria, as well as the Lago and Antigua volcanoes, with occasional eruptions by the active Santiaguito and Fuego. We wake up early the next morning to climb up Pico Zunil to enjoy the wonderful views as the sun rises. After an oatmeal breakfast we begin the hike down a narrow, steep path into a mesmerizing jungle and then through a lush bamboo forest. The final descent brings us to the Fuentes Georginas, where we enjoy an afternoon of soaking in the natural hot springs as well as a lunch at the Fuentes Comedor. At 3pm a Pickup will bring us back to Casa Argentina.
*NOTE* Pico Zunil is a challenging hike; the trail to the top is steep and the descent may be slippery.
